Does This Mean That I Have to Read It All Again?

On October 14th, Penguin UK will be releasing only the second entirely new English translation of In Search of Lost Time. (That's the English release date--I can't find any information about a U.S. release.) Thus far, all English translations have been based on C. K. Scott Moncrieff's original translation from the 1920s. If the volume titles are any indication(The Way by Swann's, In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower, The Guermantes Way, Sodom and Gomorrah, The Prisoner and the Fugitive, and Finding Time Again), it looks like it will be a more literal, less poetic translation. I look forward to the literary debates that this will inspire.

How Did I Pull This Off?

Today (aside from being the day that Jaguar is released and the seventh anniversary of the release of Windows 95) is my sixth wedding anniversary. Being "successfully" married is easily the greatest achievement of my life--my marriage has been the basis of everything good that has come since. When I met my wife, not only did I have very few of the things in my life that make me happy, I hadn't even identified most of them yet.

And I don't mean to say anything as simple as "I have found the person who completes me," because that simply isn't true. First, I'm nowhere near complete. But more important, the time since I have been married has been among the most difficult in my life. I have been struggling mightily in the general direction of completion (though I'm unlikely to reach it anytime soon), a struggle that I would never have been able to undertake without the support that my marriage has provided. In my experience, marriage doesn't make things easy, it allows them to be difficult.
