Who Rules More Than Charly Z?

In an effort to get Jaguar working a little better, I borrowed a FireWire drive from Eric, backed up my hard drive, and re-installed everything. But after re-installing Radio Userland, my Weblog disappeared from the server. I panicked and posted an angry message to my now empty Weblog. Within a few minutes, I had gotten an e-mail from Charly Z over at Driver 8 with the answer to all of my problems. He rules.

So now Jaguar is fully re-installed and everything is working. I've gained three or four gigabytes of hard drive space (God only knows what that was being used for), but Jaguar's not really behaving any better. I'm still getting flaky text rendering in all browsers.

Oh, and I started the day by getting my Airport network set up. What's especially nice about that is that the Airport base station has an extra Ethernet port for my wife's old iMac, so I can completely get rid of my old router. Airport rocks.

What Is Depression (Besides the Economy During a Bush Presidency)?

We're all on anti-depressants, right? From Tony Soprano (and maybe even his children) to Elizabeth Wurtzel, all of the cool people take anti-depressants. My wife has joked that we should have a meshugganah section for anti-depressants on the seder plate at Passover (like the maror section for the bitter herbs and the karpas section for the vegetable), since everyone there (except her) is on one anti-depressant or another. But what exactly is it we're all medicating against?

Depression is not ADD, though the symptoms sound similar, and depression is not simply sadness. Depression is more like the description from that Zoloft commercial on television:

You may feel sad, hopeless and lose interest in things you once loved. You may feel anxious, can't even sleep. Your daily activities and relationships suffer. You know when you just don't feel right.

But the best portrayal that I've come across is Andrew Solomon's Noonday Demon. I think depression is the sense that you're not in control of what happens to you, that what you do literally doesn't matter, that you're sad and there's nothing that you can do to change that. Its symptoms, like of those of grief, are as much physical as emotional--it hurts, though not in any specific physical location that you could point out. It's what some people feel when they contemplate the destruction of the World Trade Center, and it's what I feel when I contemplate our efforts to renovate our new apartment.
