Why Do I Live in New York Again?
My wife and I are expending an awful lot of time, money, and effort to live in New York because we want to be here, to be part of everything that's happening, yet we miss so many of the great things that happen here.
As a prelude to the MTV Video Music Awards, Bruce Springsteen played an hour and a half set outside of the American Museum of Natural History, seven blocks from our apartment. But we didn't know anything about it until we saw him on MTV and completely missed it. (I still don't understand how we didn't hear it from here.)
Then yesterday, there was this gloriously fitting funeral service for Lionel Hampton. The whole thing sounds like the right way to combine grieving and celebration. And it was just a few blocks uptown. Again we didn't know about it, and again we missed it.
These are some of the things that make New York great, but if you don't pay attention, New York will pass you by. Not only dosen't this city sleep, it won't even sit still.
