Who Was Marcel Proust's Girlfriend?

Today, I noticed a new phenomenon in the Referer rankings for Gnosis. After the cycle of Karyn Bosnak searches, and along with the usual variations on Gnosis searches, there are, as of this writing, eleven searches for some variation of Marcel Proust's girlfriend. This strikes me as odd.

First, Marcel Proust, the author, was gay and, to the best of my knowledge, never had a girlfriend. Marcel (last name unknown), the narrator of In Search of Lost Time, is not gay and has a girlfriend (named Albertine), but he is not Marcel Proust. So, in short, there's no such thing as Marcel Proust's girlfriend.

Second, after never seeing such a search in the referer log, there are eleven such searches (presumably looking for this entry) in one morning. My guess is that someone kept searching for "Marcel Proust's girlfriend," kept finding Gnosis, and everytime they came here, they couldn't find what they were looking for (because, being more than a week old, that entry isn't on the front page anymore).

It would be helpful to have a facility whereby once someone is here, they could easily search the whole site. Has anyone done anything like that with, say, Google's free site search on a Weblog?

Is TWX Still Available?

It looks like Steve Case's job as Chairman of AOL Time Warner may be at risk, as it probably should be. Not that I'm all that clever, but I thought this might happen. My guess is that if this happens, Dick Parsons will also be gone in less than a year. At that point, the merger will have been fully repudiated. Now if we could just change the company name back to Time Warner, with the stock trading under TWX rather than AOL, then maybe we could forget this nightmare and get on with our lives.

What's There to Do Saturday Night?

This Thursday, the New York Philharmonic will be premiering a 9/11-inspired work by John Adams. Unlike so much of the other Patriot Day madness, I'm looking forward hearing this. I got John Adams's Earbox a while back, and I love his work. WNYC will be broadcasting Saturday night's performance live. So if you're in New York and near a radio or if you're near a broadband connection Saturday night, check it out. You won't be disappointed.
