How Do I Use iSync With My Palm Pilot or Handspring?
Apple has met their self-imposed deadline to release iSync by the end of September by making a beta version available for download. It's very promising, but as with any beta, there are a few kinks to iron out. At the moment, setting it up to work with a Palm OS device is a little trickier than I had expected. You have to install the iSync iSync_Palm packages that are included in the download, and you have to install the latest version of the Palm Desktop Software for OS X (which includes HotSync 3.0). Once that's done, you have to invoke the following incantation, which is buried in the iSync Help:
- Make sure you have iCal 1.0 (or later) and HotSync 3.0 (or later) for Mac OS X installed.
You should plan to sync your Palm OS device with only one computer. If you add your Palm to more than one computer, the information may not sync correctly.
- Open HotSync Manager.
- In the HotSync menu, choose Conduit Setup, then open the Palm Address Book conduit and choose Do Nothing. Click Make Default, then click OK.
Repeat this step for the Date Book and To Do List conduits.
- Double-click the iSync Conduit in the HotSync Manager Conduit Setup window, then choose which information you want to sync using iSync. This allows your Palm Address Book, Date Book, and To Do information to be synchronized using iSync. (Notes on your Palm will continue to sync with the Palm Desktop.)
Your Palm OS device appears in the iSync window the next time you open iSync.
Once everything is set up, it seems to work very reliably, though a bit slowly. I'm looking forward to getting the .mac synchronization running, so that I can synchronize between my iBook at home and my G3 at work.
