Did You Know That You're Transmitting an IP Address?
Brad was the first person to show me this piece of pop-up spam. Then I ran across it myself on The Onion of all sites. I clicked on it just to see what would happen, and I was taken to a Web site with a URL that seemed randomly generated. The site told me the IP address of my AirPort base station and offered software for download that would keep opportunistic crackers from exploiting this highly sensitive piece of information. Now I'm trying to figure out if the ad is part of some elaborate Onion parody or if this actually scares people into buying their software. I fear it is the latter.
