Does Every Unknown Turn on the Internet Lead Somewhere Scary?

Thursday, Eric wanted to find out more about the Symbian operating system, but mis-typed the URL and ended up somewhere scary. It seems that any mis-typed URL will lead somewhere dark and unsettling, as anyone who thinks that the White House should have a ".com" address has discovered.

Then today comes the exciting news of Waypath, an attempt to find links among Weblogs. And as any self-respecting Weblogger would do upon going to such a site, I looked for sites related to Gnosis. There were several, and none of them were immediately frightening.

However, as I was perusing linked entries, I came across this, which disturbed me greatly. It seems that with our old friend Google and a phone number, you can find pretty much anyone. Our current phone number is unlisted, so searching on it turns up the previous holder of the number. I hope it stays that way. But keep this in mind the next time you're giving your phone number to someone in a bar (which you wouldn't be doing anyway, would you?).
