Can Microsoft Do Anything Right?
There was a referral from MSN's search engine in the Referer Rankings for Gnosis today, and for no apparent reason, I clicked on it to see the actual search. I saw a lot of problems:
- Note the length and complexity of the URL when compared to the URL for the same search on Google.
- Note that the first two links returned are just different versions of the same page.
- Finally (and I think most important), note the brief descriptions below each link. None of them include the search terms ("nick zahab" in this case).
All in all, poor software design from Microsoft, which shouldn't come as a surprise.

When Do I Get to Have a Full Night's Sleep?
Tonight, I'm driving up to Hartford for the second time in three days (that's eight hours of driving over a period of slightly more than forty-eight hours for someone who doesn't drive for weeks at a time), this time for a far less joyous occasion than a Bob Dylan concert. My wife and I are going to my step-father's mother's funeral. Bizarre as this may sound, I never met her. Such are the vast emotional distances contained within my family. But I want to go to support my step-father (who sounds fine on the phone) and bridge some of that distance.
