Why Does OS X Rock?

I installed the latest Developer's Preview of Apple's JDK 1.4.1, and it's still not ready for use with Moneydance or Idea, both of which I rely on. And in order to switch everything back to JDK 1.3.1, all I had to do was:

% cd /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions
% rm -rf CurrentJDK
% ln -s 1.3.1 CurrentJDK

What's Wrong With This Picture?

  1. A man is dangling a small child from a fourth story balcony.

  2. A black man (genetically, at least) is holding a white child (look at the legs) that he claims is his biological son.

  3. The child's head is covered as if it were a hostage, perhaps to further obscure the child's racial identity.

  4. The man, alleged to be a father of three, clearly doesn't know how to hold a baby.

  5. The man defends his behavior by claiming that he "got caught up in the excitement of the moment" without specifying exactly what would be so exciting about having the privacy of he and his nine-month old son violated.

What Do You Think of Vaginas?

Last night, Eric and I visited Alexandra to talk to her about design and architecture for vagina vérité, her "unabashed compilation of the diversity and beauty in the plain, ordinary, yet mysterious matter of our vaginas." There's the Web site, an exhibition, and eventually, a book. It's a project that's fascinating to me less for its subject matter (though I do find the subject enthralling) than for its interaction with the context surrounding the subject like centuries worth of badly applied paint.

But regardless of your views on the matter, you're likely to find something of interest here. So check out the site, maybe answer a questionnaire. And if you're a woman in the New York area, go to the preview of the exhibition and, if you're feeling especially bold, have your vagina's portrait taken.
