What Does It Mean When The A-List Won't Come To the President's Parties?

While I generally agree with Brad about the recent celebrity vote of no confidence on President Bush's war, I think that miss feva makes a good point:

I want my celebrities to love our President, goddamnit. I want them to sing to him at glorious parties. But we all knew this would happen when we saw the lineup for GWB's inaugural ball....um, not exactly A-list.

Maybe I've been reading too much about Parisian society, but there is something a little troubling in the most powerful man in the world's failure to be courted by the world's most sycophantic attention seekers. It makes him look irrelevant.

Will This Be Our Christmas Present?

Today, I received word that we really and truly do have approval to renovate our kitchen. It should be completed (except for the countertops) two months to the day after we moved in. Living without a kitchen for that long has been more difficult than I had expected.

Another Kindred Spirit?

Yesterday, I found a referral to Gnosis from Sinister Dexterity, a very cool Weblog that says nice things about me. Here is someone whose frame of reference, like mine, includes theology, Proust, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, and Dr. Yo Internet Radio. Based on the Weblog's title, he might even be, like me, left-handed. And he quoted a connection between John Lee Hooker and the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas that I hadn't even noticed:

If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.

Be sure to read his entry on intimations of immortality. Though I'm not entirely sold on the meme of memes, this quote, from another Weblog, resonated for me:

Besides in my opinion the sharing of memes counts for much more than the sharing of genes. That is why I prefer my friends to my relatives, and I AM proud of my memetic ancestors, whom I have chosen, unlike my genetic ones, whom I have not.
